It is a sharp pain that feels like it originates under the muscle, almost in th bone. It is not constant - i feel it if I am in anything like a lung position, such as climbing stairs fast. I was able to backpack up steep trails using poles with only occasional discomfort and have recently restarted running. I feel the pain at least sometimes during most runs but I am careful not to run fast and only go about 2 miles. I did my first marathon in 25 years about 5 months ago and the pain started a month or two after that. I did not train enough for the marathon and walked about half of it. Prior to training, though, I was a sub-six minute miler.
Take a week off from running to rest your muscles. Then reduce your running and go slower. Do stretches for your quads, hips, and knees.
Here are the ones I do. Be sure you run heavy/light, i.e. follow each run with a light workout (more walking, slower jogging, shorter distance, light cycling, light swimming).
