Does it get better than a holiday weekend to start the summer season? I mean, how excited are you for the weekend? There are many reasons today that I am pumped- half day Friday, long weekend ahead, beautiful weather, starting fourth and hopefully final week of rest from my injury. Things are good.
Memorial Day, July 4th and Labor Day- these three weekends are usually long weekends with lots of BBQ, family and relaxation. As a runner, though, I tend to look at these weekends slightly different. Over the past three years as I have morphed from non-runner to runner these weekends have also morphed into something else.
See, here is why being a runner is so sweet. As most of you settle into your holiday weekend you will likely either run a local race celebrating the weekend or get an early morning training run in. Being a long weekend, you will probably even go out for another run at some point this weekend. All of this running and fitness builds up the appetite and provides guilt free eating at the family BBQ. It is just another benefit of being a runner.
This weekend I will be making my annual trip to West Virginia with my entire family to visit with my 97 year old grandparents who are also celebrating 75 years of marriage. Three years ago during our first trip there I started my NYC marathon training, I was not a runner and needed to build a base. I ended up running laps around a track, 3 miles to be exact. Bored out of my mind this became my “birthplace” of running. The next 2 years during Memorial weekend I ran the local 20k which this year has been turned into a half marathon. I had it on my scheudle to run again, this time as a relay with my wifey, but since I am injured I will be taking on the 5k walk.
I’ve been feeling so much better and stronger over the past week. I am hopeful that this will be the last week of my injury shutdown and I can get back out and run again soon. I know tomorrow is only a 5k walk, but I am so excited to pin the number on and get back out there.
Hope you all have a fantastic Memorial Day weekend. Remember the fallen.
Will you be running this weekend? What race will you run? What Memorial Day traditions do you have?
