Gym Rat

I’m officially a gym rat. I never thought I’d see the day. The thing is, I hate the gym. I hate treadmills, elliptically, bikes, weights… All of it. The idea of being inside working out makes me miserable. I’d much rather go walk 20 miles (okay… run) than spend an hour on a machine. Right now that isn’t possible so I started to make the best of it.

BUT… I do love my fitness classes. Like adore them. When I’m done running for school next year, you better believe I’m getting a gym membership.


Sun- walk to grocery store. They don’t offer classes that fit my work schedule on Sundays so this has become part of the routine.

Mon- 7am spin. I love this teacher. She’s awesome. She was a track runner and now she’s a bomb triathlete. And works at the beach. Basically I want to be her and she kicks my butt and has good music.
I was supposed to go to kickboxing and Zumba after work but they cancelled them. I just wish I hadn’t driven all the way there to find out… I was slightly heartbroken. Kickboxing is a new fave.

Tues- cardio sculpt aka body pump and yoga. I go to a YMCA so they can’t call the classes the normal names. I kid you not when I say I was still sore Friday. That class is no joke. It was a lot of fun though and I felt like I got an incredible workout in, especially my back. But I hated the yoga instructor. I will never take that class again. Her poses were all wrong and she just wasn’t a positive person. I refuse to go to classes I dislike.
Oh, and I forgot to mention that I was so excited, I forgot my sneakers in my car on the way in. I’m awkward.


Wed- 7am spin. Wednesdays are taught by another instructor who I’m not a fan of but this class was killer. I covered almost 22 miles in the hour (all “mountains” and uphill, mind you) and my favorite instructor was spinning alongside me. We kept stifling smiles as we rolled our eyes at the ridiculousness of the teacher. The music isn’t very good but again, can’t win ‘em all! I still love the post-workout high I get from spinning. It’s the closest thing to running.

Thurs- I wasn’t sure I was going to go because I was so sore but I wanted to try a new class. It’s called “core and condition”. It was alright- not much cardio- just a lot of abs. I don’t feel like I got a great workout in but it was a nice way to work my core and get a small workout in after sitting in the car all day.

Fri- 7am spin. My favorite instructor teaches this so naturally I was excited even after staying up until midnight with a friend. Except when I got there… she never showed up. I don’t know exactly what happened but the lady in the class that our instructor doesn’t really like (although the lady doesn’t know it) decided to spend the full hour pretending to be her and imitating what she always says, so we managed to get in a good workout anyways. I missed the 5pm Zumba class because I was at my nutritionist appt longer than I was supposed to be.

sat- 7am Zumba, 4.5 mile walk with parents. This was a good balance of workouts even though I didn’t love the Zumba at all. It felt good to get a walk in though!

I think the best part about my schedule right now is the variety. I don’t get bored of any classes because every day is different. There are a bunch of instructors and I can pick and choose which ones I want to go to. I’m just having a good time with it, which I think I lost sight of with my running towards the end. I’m not saying I don’t miss running, because I miss it more than you know, but I’m not sitting here moping around either. I’ve found things to replace it and I love that.

I’m actually at a point where I’m so pain-free that I kind of want to try again but I’m afraid to jump back in again so soon. It’s been 2 weeks now, so I think if I wait another week or two, I’ll give it a shot. I want to do it right this time, though, so I think I will need to be put on a strict training plan by my coach so I don’t overdo it again by jumping in too fast.
