Chicago Money

Posted Jul 02 2009 9:39pm
Although it was only a three-day work-week for me, it felt like an eight-day week, but that’s another story. I took today off from work, and I’ll be off tomorrow as well. My wife and I went to see the new Johnny Depp movie, Public Enemies. I liked the movie for three reasons: (1) it had been nearly four years since I last watched a movie in the theater, (2) I like Johnny Depp, and (3) the movie is about John Dillenger, and one of the events in the movie took place near where I grew up in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. My third reason for enjoying the movie may not sound like a big deal, but a quick look at a map reveals a lack of Interstate highways in the U.P., which probably impeded the amount of traffic, and people, to see the area. Thus, change comes slowly to the U.P. While my home town is certainly much different today than it was during the 1930s, some of the people still refer to the “Chicago money” that built camps or resorts during the 1920s and 30s in the Western U.P. and Northeastern Wisconsin. And much of that “Chicago money” came from the gangsters and outlaws of the time.

After the movie, we picked up our stash of produce from the Brad’s Produce farm. Once at home, I put the tent up again. It was much easier this time without Braedon, um, “helping.” He means well though, and we are spending another night camping in the back yard tonight. Tomorrow I think we will go for a hike in the woods.
