Boys’ State Champions, Lady Highlanders and Lady Panthers Split Victories at Mooberrys

3A Boys’ State XC Champions North Central and 4A Champions Mead split the distance relays at the Mooberry Relays Saturday at Whitworth University. North Central won the 4 x 1600, and Distance Medley, and was second in the 4 x 800. Mead won the 4 x 800, was second in the 4 x 1600, and fourth in the DM.

4 x 1600: NC Sets a new record
NC’s team of Ben Johnston, Andy Kimpel, Leon Dean, and Jeff Howard averaged 4:24 and set a new record in the 4 x 1600. The Indians ran 17:39, which bested the previous record by two seconds; held by the Ferris team of Justin Houck, Mike Quackenbush, Ben Poffenroth, and Robert Cosby. Splits for the Indians were Johnston – 4:25, Kimpel – 4:19, Dean – 4:21, and Howard – 4:29. Mead finished second in 18:04 a minute ahead of University in 19:03.

Distance Medley: NC pulls away to victory
Three members of the 4 x 1600 came back an hour later to get the victory in the Distance Medley. JT Melgren joined Kimpel, Johnston, and Dean. Kimpel led off with a 3:11 1200 and handed off to Melgren who ran a :55. Johnston took over with the 800 leg running a 2:05 before handing off the Dean who finished with a 4:32 to give the Indians a winning time of 10:43. Central Valley finished a surprising second with a 11:10. Coach Mahoney was very pleased with the Bears competitive racing.

4 x 800: Mead gets payback
Mead’s foursome of Jordan Baker, Jordan Curnutt, Steve Kitsch, and Corry Foss averaged just under 2:04 per leg to pick up the victory. NC finished second in 8:19.

Mead and Shalde split the victories in the distance events on Saturday. Mead won the 4 x 800 and Baylee Mires won the Lindgren Mile. Shadle won the Distance Medley and Andrea Nelson won the open 3200 meters.

Distance Medley: Shadle pulls away from University
The Titans led in the early legs of the Distance Medley then the Highlanders took over during the 800 leg and pulled away Shalde won in 13:02 to University’s 13:20.

4 x 800: Mead gets the victory
The Panthers averaged 2:30 to get the 5 second victory over the Highlanders. Mead won in 10:02 to Shalde’s 10:07.

Lindgren Mile:
Boys: Saxon Adam Thorne led from wire to wire in the Lindgren Mile. Thorne was shadowed for 3 and half laps by Bullpup Tate Kelly. Thorne won in 4:20 just ahead of Kelly in 4:23. Wildcat junior Allen Schroeder just nipped Nathan Weitz from Shalde.

Girls: Panther sophomore Baylee Milres held a five meter lead over Shalde’s Celsea Chladler for three laps then pulled away in the third and extended her lead in the foruth. Mires won in 5:19. A pack of Amanda Wilson (Riverside) – 5:30, Lauren Earthman (Ferris) – 5:31, Taylor Ingebristen (Mead) – 5:32, and Lexi Greenwood (LC) – 5:32 slipped past Chadler in the final 100.

Boys: Senior Anthony Brown (9:48) from University got an eleven second victory over 2A competitors Arick Zachman (9:59) from Cheney and Justin Degenhardt (10:01) from WV.

Girls: Shadle’s Andrea Nelson (11:39) also got an eleven second victory in the 3200. She outdistanced Titan Stevie Gildehaus (11:50). WV’s Krystal Hughes fisnihed third in 12:01.
