Bears and Cats

Posted Jun 02 2009 4:38pm
Central Valley and Mt. Spokane hooked up in the penultimate week of GSL competition at CV. I was able to catch a little bit of the meet after my son's middle school meet. Both CV and Mt. Spo. were doubling their big guns. Mt. Spo's Allan Schroeder and Caleb Dietz, and CV's Rudy Spencer went for the 1600 - 3200 double. While CV's Jon Swanson went for the 1600 - 800 double as did Mt. Spo's Courtney Zalud.

I missed the 1600 but did get a few results.

1600
1. Allan Schroeder MtS 4:31
2. Jon Swanson CV 4:32
3. Rudy Spencer CV 4:34

1. Courtney Zalud MtS 5:27

800
1. Brad Whitley CV 1:58

1. Courtney Zalud MtS 2:27

3200
Schroeder took the early lead in the 3200 and gained a 10 meter advantage over teammate Dietz and pack of Bears, which were practicing team racing tactics, by the end of the first lap. Schroeder extended his lead through the first mile while the pack moved ahead of Dietz. With Schroeder just cruising Spencer started to close the gap on the Mt. Spo junior in laps 5, 6, & 7. Schroeder finished with a strong last lap to get his second victory of the day. The CV pack broke up during the second mile and saw Hoff holding off Dietz.
