Back Deck: A Boston Brunchers Meetup

Posted Jan 23 2013 3:28am

It’s WIAW !! I mentioned briefly in my post on Monday that I was invited to join the Boston Brunchers at Back Deck Boston . I was a little nervous at first since I’ve never been to a real blog meet up besides the time that Hollie came and stayed with me one night, so I didn’t know what to expect. I had no idea how it worked, if I would be with people way older than me or the same age as me, if I would like the food, nothing. I went in almost blind and I tend to get really nervous for fear of the unknown. I almost used the airport as my excuse as to why I couldn’t go, but I didn’t. And I am so glad I didn’t give in to my nerves, because it turned out to be an incredible experience.

I hopped in the car around 10:30am on Sunday morning which would give me ample time to drive into the city and find a place to park.

notice that I was wearing jeans? First (and last) time all break pretty much.

The restaurant itself had a very outdoorsy summery feel and I really liked it. They had great music playing and it was well-lit. The tables were designed to look like outdoor wooden patio furniture with similar decorations on the walls and ceilings. It was a very classy place that did a great job bringing the outdoors in.

I was one of the first to arrive and I was originally going to stick with my safe water like I normally do when I go to a restaurant. It isn’t always because it’s “healthier” but it’s also because there aren’t a lot of drinks I do like. I obviously could not order alcohol like the rest of the group because I’m not 21, but I decided to branch out and have a lemonade. It was delicious.

Back Deck lemonade. I liked that it didn’t have a fake sweet flavor to it.

Once everyone arrived, we starting looking over the menus and chatting about what we wanted to order. I’ll be honest, a self-proclaimed picky eater, I struggled with the appetizer menu. Everyone else seemed really enthusiastic about all of the items but I couldn’t find anything I wanted. We were sharing them around the table anyways, so I used it as an opportunity to try (albeit extremely small) bites of some of the things ordered. I can’t really say a whole lot on what we had because I don’t have anything to compare it too, but I was incredibly proud of myself for facing those fears. Because honestly, what’s the worst thing that can happen? I don’t like something. Big deal.

I tried a very small bite of the dip for the pita bread. It tasted a lot like cream cheese, and I didn’t hate it at all.

Grilled grapefruit. It was extremely difficult to eat and my spoonful ended up being more juice than a fruit, but it was another new flavor for my narrow palate.

Front: squash soup
Back: chicken livers and greens
I didn’t try the soup (I’m not a fan of squash) but I did try the chicken livers. I’m not sure I would have if I had remembered what they were when I took a bite, but I’m glad I did. It have a very irony flavor to it and kind of reminded me of extremely tender steak, actually.

Like I said, I tried teeny tiny bites of a bunch of things. I also wanted to save room for lunch (and dessert) so I probably wouldn’t have gone too crazy anyways).

Shortly after, it was time for lunch. I had looked at the menu online prior to coming to the event so I had a pretty good idea of what I was going to get. I decided on the three cheese grilled cheese on sourdough and it was delicious! Oh my gosh the bread tasted fresh, the cheese was extra gooey, and the house made potato wedge fries were incredible! I can’t tell you the last time I had french fries. It’s probably been a couple of years at least and I ate every last bite of this meal.

look at all the cheese stuffed inside. Yum.

another popular dish among the other brunchers. I didn't try it because I don't really eat eggs but they were raving about it!

I almost ordered this challah french toast and kind of wish I had. It was enormous so we all tried a few bites. This variety was bourbon soaked with bananas. The alcohol was extremely strong so I didn't love that aspect but I would have gotten the one stuffed with chocolate instead ;)

Obviously when the dessert menu came out, we were stuffed but how could we leave without sampling almost the entire menu? That includes dessert. We decided on almost everything on the menu. It was all amazing. The homemade s’mores with cranberry marshmallow stole the show for me.

This one is the peanut butter marshmallow s’more.

The grilled pound cake was good although I got a piece from the corner so it tasted a bit dry. Someone else said the middle was perfect though. The chocolate cake was okay, but nothing to write home about, and I already told you how I feel about the s’mores. We also ordered the drunken three musketeers ice cream but I didn’t try it. I heard it tasted extremely boozy though, so I’m glad I didn’t.

I left on a full stomach and made the drive home before I caught my flight back to Baltimore. I took a little chocolate home with me though ;)

one of the many places I found chocolate on my hands

Hopefully I’ll have another opportunity to dine with the brunchers when I come home in May! I’m so glad I got to meet them all and they had some really great things to say about careers and living in Boston that I will be able to use when it’s time for me to start looking at internships, jobs, and hopefully apartments in the near future!
