Everyone knows that you can’t roller skate in a buffalo herd , but you can run an ultra in one if you’ve a mind to. Organizers of the Antelope Island Buffalo Run in Utah (“Run where the buffalo roam”) are pretty explicit about their races, ranging from 25k up to 100 miles.
“There are about 45 miles of trails there with 500 head of buffalo to dodge. Sometime they move, sometimes they don’t,” the web site reads.
Spectator Ty Draper was a little concerned when the runners approached a rather large specimen along the trail, and attempted to persuade the beast to move aside.
“I figured I had a more gentle way of doing it (convincing the bison to move) because I wasn’t running straight at him in a herd,” Draper told the Deseret News .
I’m a city boy, and I could have told him what the result of that was likely to be, although it did make a pretty awesome photo.
Draper suffered a minor rib injury and the bison trotted away without further incident. The race director said this was the only violent incident with an animal in eight years.
