4-Mile Make It To The Line Race Recap

Posted Jan 17 2013 12:05pm

Today the weather outside is frightful!  Well at least by this beach girls standards.  The temp outside is 40 degrees with a wind chill of 31 degrees.  The wind is howling at 20 mph out of the North.  While I am searching the internet for a new treadmill run to tackle I remember the last race of 2012 I ran, the 4-Mile Make It To The Line at the Flora-Bama.  The weather conditions for that day were almost identical!  Then I remember I never did a race recap on the run.  It has been a crazy last month!

So here it is…

The race did not start until 9 am so I had plenty of time that morning to get ready.  The weather outside was freezing and windy, (42 degrees, wind chill 34 degrees and 20 mph N winds) I decided on my Under Armor cold gear tights, Lulu speed shorts, ski socks, Nike cold gear top, Gore Windstopper, gloves and ski hat.  With all that on you think I would have been semi warm, but no I was freezing.

I head over to the Flora-Bama to pick up my race packet.  I pick up my packet and head back to my car and try to unthaw when I realize I had left my arm band for iphone.  My house is only 15 minutes away so I head to the house to grab it.  I run in the house and am envious of everyone sitting on the couch.  They looked so warm.  Have I ever told you how much I hate the cold weather and anything below 70 degrees is cold to me.  I do live in the south for a good reason.

I am back at the Bama and finally make the dreaded trip to the starting line; I can not feel my toes, fingers or face at this point!

Do I look cold?  I am cold just looking at this picture.  That’s me in the black tights and blue jacket!

The gun goes shoots and we are off.  The first two miles we run into a headwind of 20 mph, yikes.

My first mile I hit at 7:33, second 7:42, you would think at this point I am starting to warm up, but no I am still freezing.  I could not seem to lengthen my stride out.

Going into my third and fourth mile I was able to pick up the pace a little without the wind blowing me back.  Third mile split – 7:38, Fourth mile split – 7:30.

My finishing time 30:23 – with an average pace of 7:36.  Honestly I felt awful, that four miles kicked my butt and I never warmed up.

Definitely not one of my best runs.  I think I ended up placing 7th female overall and second in my division.

Lessons learned:

  • I am not a cold weather runner
  • If the weather is going to be below 50 degrees I need to properly warm up before heading to the starting line
  • I actually run slower in cold weather?

What is the coldest race you have tackled?
