Hi, I'm Ron, and I'm an ME/CFS survivor (so far anyway), 24 years and counting. I am, at the time of writing, pretty much housebound. This restricts me to mostly sedentary pastimes - reading, blogging, occasionally sloping off to the pub, and cooking when I can, which isn't as often as I'd like. I do, though, make my own bread by hand, at least once a week - good food and physio in one package!

I also have severe COPD, the precursors of which - asthma and bronchiectasis - resulted from simultaneous whooping cough and measles at age 2, either one of which was capable of trashing my lungs. Together, I was pretty much done for. The reason why COPD - being the more serious - isn't listed first is because, in one form or another, it's always been with me, whereas ME/CFS was inflicted upon me, and is the biggest single factor in my disability. When I'm able to get out, my primary interests are birding and photography (digital), and beer (well, everyone is entitled to one vice), as they fit my current abilities. There used to be others, like camping, backpacking and fishing, but I'm afraid they're history.

I've been writing about health matters online since 2004. It all started when I was asked to write a magazine column, about computer matters, for the ME Association here in the UK (ME, if you're American, is CFS), and expanded into a new website, Ron's Realm, where I covered ME/CFS as the primary health issue, plus a whole load of more general stuff - I'm nothing if not opinionated! Now, though, I put all my effort into my Ron's Rants blog, which has been running since April 2008, and which covers a wide range of health and other topics, with COPD featuring strongly, as does ME/CFS. And if you're reading this in the UK, you'll find a lot of benefits information, too.

In the summer of 1983 - just to make sure I didn't get bored - I was struck by lightning while walking in the hills of North Wales, leaving me with Central Nervous System damage, and a mess of physical problems. Basically, it fried my feet (quite literally), and trashed most of my joints. I think that it provided the trigger for my ME/CFS, too, and it may also be responsible for the rapid spread of osteo arthritis the last few years.

By the way, I've inserted dotted lines as it seems to be the only way to get paragraph spacing. I care about what I write, even a squib like this, and I resent it being crammed into one long paragraph.
