What Doesn’t Go On At Tantra Workshops

Posted Jan 27 2009 7:16pm
…or at least the ones I went to.

Most people think that Tantra is about learning ways to fuck better. Tantra is about sex and has absolutely nothing to do with sex. When you get past the superficial souped up nookie parts of it, when you get past the common- snicker-media perception of it, it is a whole different thing. Tantra is primarily a way to connect to yourself. After that it can be about connecting differently with other people outside of sex. Then from that place, you decide if you want to be sexual with them. All that we learn starts and ends with our connection to ourselves. Tantra is really about a different way of living.

I am sure that there are workshops out there that have penis vagina fucking involved. One couple in New York comes to mind, but for the life of me, I cannot remember their names and there is a good chance they aren’t even doing them anymore. I cannot find their link. I knew of “feasts” in Marin County where people were blindfolded and the assistants went around feeding people. As I knew a number of the board members for the Center that hosted them, I also know that at one point, they were having issues with some of the assistants being a little too familiar with the participants and there were whispers of possible lawsuits over inappropriate gropings. And… my, my when I go to their site, the feasts aren't being offered anymore.

For the most part, unless you have taken MANY workshops with a particular Teacher, are a part of the inner circle, so to speak, and have an invitation to participate in a certain ritual, you will not find intercourse at all.

I have been to many workshops and have never once watched or participated in any of the Kama Sutra postions. (this one is another whole topic for a future post:.how the Kama Sutra is NOT a Tantric text). In fact, in my first training, we had a “red light” around sex for the first four days in or outside the workshop. This applied to singles and couples alike whether in public or private. This was done to build the energy. And it did. It was really fun hearing that night when we got a green light. Yum.

I have never watched anyone participate in oral pleasuring at a workshop. After that first four days mentioned above and for the other cycles that yearlong workshop, sex of all kinds was allowed in the Temple in off hours, and we did have fun there. But even that workshop changed their policy and no longer allowed it after our year was done. There was healing massage done at the workshops, but that was either done in private with some Teachers or, if in group, only at a weeklong workshops after preliminary exercises were done over a number of days to build up to that point. And often, I heard just as many people screaming and crying in pain as I did in orgasm.

So for those who think that it is all titillating there...so sorry to disappoint. If and when you do go, what you will often find is this: along with the bliss, you will be facing yourself in all sorts of unimaginable terrifying and painful but healing ways as you open to more and more ecstasy in your body. THAT is what the workshops are all about.
