Five years ago I bought my first gingerbread house kit, an impulse purchase from a craft store. I was excited about doing the project with the kids, especially because it was our first Christmas just the three of us — that is, until I saw the horribly decorated, OSHA-challenged product we made. Where was the cute, straight house in the picture?! I hated it and tossed it as soon as Christmas was over.
But, you know what? The kids loved it. And asked to make another one the next year. This time I lowered my expectations and used a few tricks I had learned, avoiding the traps from ‘05. it came out better –it’s the one in the photo above.
We’ve made imperfect, crazy-looking gingerbread houses each holiday season since then. I guess you could say it became a tradition for the 3 of us — something I suggest for single parents in this month’s Imperfect Parent column. Check it out — and pass the icing.
