spotting before periods for o long period (6-12 days)

spotting before the cycle is due is becomming a persistent event during the last year. The number of days, spotting occurrs varies from 6-12 days (every day) before he cycle itself, which lasts for 7 more days.

What might be the reason? I am getting really concerned. What tests shall I make?
