Financial Infidelity and Cheating Husbands

Posted Aug 24 2008 2:16am
Affairs cost money. A man who is cheating on his wife has to pay to play. So cheating husbands resort to financial infidelity to cover up what they spend on their affairs. Whether it’s a one night stand or a long term affair, money is being spent somewhere along the way. The expenditures associated with an extramarital affair can include hotel rooms, flowers, jewelry, dinners at fancy restaurants, lavish gifts, vacations, rent money, spa treatments, car payments, child support - just to name a few.

Cheating Husbands and Financial Infidelity

Several years ago I wrote an article that called attention to the link between financial infidelity and sexual infidelity. A cheating husband generally resorts to some form of financial infidelity to hide the money he’s spending on his affair. Being upfront with you about the money he’s spending on the Other Woman, would mean exposing his affair. As a result, he lies to you, or tries to cover up how his money is being spent. In doing so he is committing financial infidelity. Sexual infidelity and financial infidelity usually go hand-and-hand.

3 Famous Cheating Husbands Guilty of Financial Infidelity

To drive home this point, let’s look at 3 well-known cheating husbands who are guilty of financial infidelity linked with sexual infidelity. These high profile cheating husbands recently made national news when their extramarital affairs were exposed.

Former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer paid $3000 for the services of a high priced call girl. It eventually came out that he spent an estimated $80,000 with an elite prostitution ring.

Supermodel Christie Brinkley’s husband Peter Cook , gave his teenage mistress $15,000 for a down payment on her car, then paid her $300,000 in hush money after their was exposed. At the divorce trial, it was revealed that he was spending in excess of $3000 a month on internet porn and adult matchmaker sites.

John Edwards’ mistress, Rielle Hunter is receiving payments of $15,000 a month, but Edwards claims someone is making these payments without his knowledge, on his behalf. He says his affair with Hunter was over in 2006, but it looks like there’s still some financial infidelity going on.

I seriously doubt that Silda Spitzer, Christie Brinkley, or Elizabeth Edwards knew their husbands were spending that kind of money to initiate and maintain their extramarital affairs. We’re talking major financial infidelity here.

These high profile cheating husbands may be extreme examples of financial infidelity, but it happens on a smaller scale everyday. Cheating husbands at all income levels tell lies and juggle family finances to keep their wives from finding out about the missing funds. To do otherwise would be to risk exposing the affair.

Stay Alert and Follow the Money Trail

You’ve heard that expression “Follow the money.” If you suspect your husband of cheating on you, it pays to keep a watchful eye on the financial end of things and follow the money trail. Sexual infidelity and financial infidelity usually go hand in hand. The presence of one type of infidelity can alert you to the existence of the other. A lot of financial infidelity gets exposed at tax time when couples file their joint tax returns. But signs of financial infidelity can turn up any time of the year. Knowing what to look for is the key.

NOTE: Financial infidelity can also be an indication of drug or alcohol addiction, a gambling habit, a major business loss, or some other problem your husband doesn’t want you to know about.

Keep your eye on the family finances. If there’s money missing or suspicious expenditures, take a closer look. If your husband is wining and dining a mistress on the side, paying financial support for a love-child, or liquidating assets in preparation for a surprise divorce, you can't afford to be the last to know.
