Dear Dr. Romance: I have a traumatic brain injury

Posted Nov 09 2013 5:46pm

Dear Dr. Romance:

A lot has happened in recent weeks that has wreaked havoc on my life.

A friend of twenty years, Told me he did not consider me a real friend, although I've been spending many hours helping him with gaming for years.

My sweetie pet hamster died. It was his time, as I had him 2 years 1 1/2 months. Still, even though I know it was just nature taking its course, I miss him terribly. He was my little buddy, and until I get to the pet store, I have nobody to play with and hold in my hands, and love like one can love a pet.

I have been job hunting for over a year, with no luck. MANY MANY people are in that boat, I know. My problem is unique, because I was a child I acquired a traumatic brain injury after a bike-car collision. That has made life different for me, and makes job-hunting difficult.

However, I need to be more independent and stop living off of my parents' generosity. I want to make my own money, and support myself. Luckily I have the love of my family, the support of real friends, and many people on my side helping me through tough times. Because of all of them, and my own strength, I am moving forward each day with a positive attitude!

Dear Reader:

I'm so sorry to hear of your losses. I know from personal experience how painful the loss of a pet is. Your "friend" was cruel, but consider that maybe he didn't mean to be so harsh.    I wish you luck in your job search. Try volunteering until you get a job. I know there is a non-profit organization that could use your skills somewhere near where you live. That will keep you focused and connected until you find a job. "Your Job on Earth" can help you figure out where your unique abilities and expertise, such as with the gaming world, fit into your job search.    It Ends With You: Grow Up and Out of Dysfunction   will help you figure out what skills you need to become more independent.
