Bootcamps

Posted Aug 08 2012 8:15am

I have had many inquiries about the bootcamps and there seems to be some confusion about signing up. There is one bootcamp about to start next Friday. I have had about 30 inquiries about it and have to discuss it with a few more people.

If you sent me email but I haven’t gotten back to you with details about this, I will. I’ve asked that people email me and understand what it entails before signing up. But there are only 3 spots left and I want to make sure that those who take a spot are serious about bootcamp and understand what it is.

The other bootcamp is a 4 week self-esteem bootcamp. I’m being less stringent about limiting the number of registrations but it is limited.

There are no other bootcamps offered until the GPYB Holiday Bootcamp which begins about November 15 to January 1.

Descriptions of both bootcamps after the jump. I included a week by week description of the ACDF bootcamp so you know exactly what you are doing and what it’s about:

ACOA/ACDF Bootcamp (Adult Children of Alcoholics or Adult Children of Dysfunctional Families)

August 17th to September 28th.

This bootcamp is broken into 2 parts.

Part 1 covers historical work such as exploring and changing your childhood-based beliefs about your self, discovering the ”role” you played in the family and still play not only in your family but in your relationships.

If you grew up in a dysfunctional family, you continue to try to win those battles that you didn’t win while growing up and continue to play the role that you know. It is very hard to have successful relationships when you are trying to finish unfinished business out in the world. You also attract others who are ALSO trying to do the same.

We will talk about roles and also a more in-depth discussion of defense mechanisms (like the recent post on them), recognizing and changing self-sabotage, the role being an ACOA/ACDF plays in your relationships, over-developed defense mechanisms.

Part 2 is about healing those wounds in Part 1. The last 3 weeks of the boot camp will focus on learning how to ”perceive” in a normal way; how to keep challenging the truth of what you are seeing, how to let go control, how to heal your loss and how to be empowered and move on.

This is the layout by week:

1. Affirming/making a commitment to change. We’ll be talking about what changes you want to make in your life and what things have been stumbling blocks in the past. Overview of what happened (an introductory thread about you background) and what your goals are for the bootcamp.
2. Defense mechanism (see the latest post on the blog). We’ll talk about that in-depth as well as childhood environment/dysfunctional family systems and how your role was defined (i.e. scapegoat, lost child, hero etc) and how that has carried to your adult life.
3. Looking at your parents/family in an “inventory” kind of way. Forgiveness of yourself and others.

The next 3 weeks are about changing core beliefs and behaviors:

4. What was your early belief system about the world, about relationships, about you and your family. How to change those beliefs now.
5. Fear of success. Sabotage and self-fulfilling prophecy. How have you undermined yourself. How do you recreate environments that you were raised in no matter how much you are completely opposed to “living that way.” How many times have you resolved to change and can’t? How to change comfort zones and step out of your fear of success (in life, at work, in relationships) and how to embrace success andmake it be okay.
6. How to continue to heal and be empowered. How to keep this working in your life.

Like all bootcamps you have to journal 5 days a week and respond to at least 3 other journals on those 5 days.

You will get a weekly assignment and feedback from me.

It does not matter what time zone you are in, you can do your posting anytime and your responses anytime but it has to be 5 days a week.

This is the first time I am offering this on-line (I’ve done it live before) and don’t know when I will offer it again, if ever (I last offered it 2 years ago). It is absolutely limited to 6 people but the 6 people must be able to commit to the participation level and the work. If you can’t, please do not sign up for this.

I occasionally have to “chase” people in bootcamps to find out why they are not doing the work or journaling (some bootcamps are more cohesive than others) and I don’t want to do that in this bootcamp. If you are serious about delving into this, then please send me email at sj_elliott@optonline.net and if you are not, please don’t sign up. Because of the level of interest and the fact that I don’t know when, if ever, I will offer this again, please be serious about this work. I am going to send out information by Monday so please speak to me and be signed up by then.

Self-esteem Bootcamp

Sept 7 to 28

This bootcamp is more like a 4-week workshop that will focus exclusively on raising self-esteem. We will uncover the origins of your low self-esteem, the beliefs you have about yourself and how to change that. Although this bootcamp will focus entirely on you, we will have some discussions about how dysfunctional families and dysfunctional relationships lead to the crash of your self-esteem.

We will get into much more than just affirmations and self-care (though there will be some of that), going back through the cognitive psychology that works to change self-image.

The format of this I ask that you keep a journal but you don’t have to keep it on-line (though you can). Instead, you will post the work we are doing which some days might be a journal. You will be expected to post 5 days a week and respond to at least 3 other posts (of journal type nature). This is not optional. In all bootcamps feedback and support from the group is important but is especially important in a self-esteem bootcamp. I don’t want anyone to feel, “Why is no one responding to my posts?” That would be a terrible thing to experience in a self-esteem bootcamp!

I would like to have at least one group chat via Webex but it depends on how many people we have and the time zones involved. The chat will be optional but if 6 people want to attend and they are in 6 different time zones, that might be tricky. I’ll see what we can do.
