Well, I didn’t get a commission to write a guide to prostate cancer. Very disappointing as I put a lot of effort into researching the pitch but the publisher is opting for someone with a medical background. Fair enough. I can’t argue with that but this is the part of freelancing that gets to me. My partner worked for a city law firm for a while and said the partners/juniors don’t do anything for free – even emails are logged for time and charged to the client. This approach doesn’t really fit with freelance life as so much of what you do as a writer is speculative, and that can be hard to manage at times, especially when you are worried about where the next pay check is coming from.
