Where to begin?

I've always been mildly thrilled at the idea of partaking regularly in some sort of outdoor recreational activity--something to get me out of the doldrums of gym-going and engender a healthy interest in the world around me. The problem? I have no idea where to begin.

I know that probably sounds kind of silly--most people have passions that they just naturally...well, have. My primary issue is that I'm not exactly the most coordinated person, and there's something about the hazards of outdoor sports that intimidates me somewhat.

So for someone who's looking to make a transition from the gym to outdoors but isn't necessarily a gung-ho sporty type, what's the best way to discover one's outdoor activity of choice (especially when the choices are so dizzying)?

I love to walk in the woods, so for me it's hiking. It's easy to get started and you don't really have to master any fancy equipment or skills. If you like it you can advace to more difficult terrain.
