For anyone who is planning to be in Ottawa and wants to row, I highly recommend ONEC (Ottawa New Edinburgh Club): http://www.onec.ca/ John Boyd is the instructor for those just starting out and he is really good - very patient and knowledgeable. There was a pretty good selection of single through quad shells, and the members were incredibly nice and helpful. Also, the Ottawa river is a beautiful place to row in the summer - wide and long, with lots of trees and wildlife along the shores.
For those who want to row using larger shells (i.e., 4-8 people), try ORC (Ottawa Rowing Club): http://www.ottawarowingclub.com/ Only downside is that ORC is located a bit closer to the busy downtown Ottawa river traffic.
