Heat Stroke?

Posted by C.L. R.

When is the time to worry about heat stroke? I read that if your body gets up to 106 degrees, you're at risk, yet I know that people do just fine in situations like Hatha Yoga. At what temperature is it still safe to run outdoors and why?

Heat stroke is not good!. Heat stroke happens when your body temperature rises significantly above the usual 98.6 (37 degrees Celsius). This can happen at relatively low temperatures if you are exercising and not able to dissipate the heat you are generating ... I know of a healthy man who collapsed while trying to run a 5k in 85 degree weather, because he was out of shape, had a beer before the run, and ignored the symptoms while he ran uphill in the sunshine! His body temperature was over 106 when it was measured more than an hour after he collapsed. He nearly died from heat stroke. (He was unconscious in the intensive care unit for days). So the lesson is not to exert yourself when the temperature rises above 85 or 90 degrees F, and make sure you take active steps to remain cool when the thermometer rises above 100. Probably the most important thing (other than finding shade) is to maintain your hydration -- drink lots of water!
Anyone comment on the link between Mild Traumatic Brain Injury and heat stroke?
