Getting More Vitamin D in Your Diet

Vitamin D, as we know, is important for the health of your bones, and it's even been linked to heart disease and colon cancer prevention. A woman's daily recommended intake of 400 IU can be met easily with fortified milk, orange juice, and multivitamins. However, researchers suggest that 400 IU might not be enough and that it would be more reasonable to get up to 2,000 IU. The best source of vitamin D is still sunlight (which, of course, can cause melanoma) so the best thing to do is add SPF to sensitive areas like the face and ears, and allow less sensitive areas (arms or legs) to soak up at least 15 minutes of sunlight. The best time of day is the middle of it, when the sun is strongest (so you don't need to stay in it for too long).
