You Are NOT What You Eat: Why Raw Food Alone Cannot Resolve Your Conflicts or Help You Heal Your Broken Heart

“You are what you eat” has become a rather popular catch phrase in health circles for the fact that it offers an invitation to consider the quality of the foods we put in our bodies.

While I will be the first to suggest that the food you put in your mouth has a significant impact on every cell of your body, and therefore can tremendously influence the way you think, feel, sleep, move, and perceive the world around you…

…You are most certainly NOT what you eat.

And I can prove it.  :-)

Take a walk in a park and stop to notice the trees, the grass, the flowers, the birds. What happens?Take a walk in a park and stop to notice the trees, the grass, the flowers, the birds.

What happens?

Spend 15 minutes next to someone in a fabulous mood and tell me what that does for your indigestion.

Hire a housekeeper to totally clean your home from top to bottom and let me know if it does anything for your energy level.

Pay your taxes on time.

Hold an elderly person’s hand or help a person in need do some simple task, like button their shirt or cross the street.

Tell someone you love them and give them a hug.Apologize for something you did to hurt another person.

Tell the truth, even when it’s not easy.

Tell someone you love them and give them a hug.

Love them, even if you have so many reasons not to.

Goji berries may boost your anti-oxidant power, but they will not build your business, resolve your conflicts, or help you heal your broken heart.

While nutrition has a huge impact on your mood, confidence, health, comfort and general well-being, if you make it your obsession, if you fall into a trap of guilt, worry, or self-punishment,  you’ll be no better off than if you’d sat yourself down to a juicy bacon double cheeseburger with a milkshake on the side while surrounded by people you love in the sun.

In the presence of stress, guilt, self-invalidation, conflict, obsession, worry and resentment, your digestive tract will tighten like a clamp and your endocrine system will send toxins searing through every cell of your body — no matter how many carrot sticks you eat.

So, you’re not what you eat.

You are the creative combination of the dreams you’ve dreamt, the books you’ve read, the places you’ve been. You are the creative combination of the dreams you’ve dreamt, the books you’ve read, the places you’ve been, and even the first slobbery kiss in the back of a high school bus. Weaved into the very essence of who you are you’ll find the hopes you hold, the lies you’ve told, and the things you said you’d be when you “grow up.”

You’ve lived, loved, and lost a lot along the way, and all those experiences influence how you experience your life at any moment.

And all of this can make for an interesting conversation, one that might even require a tissue or two to get us through it, but for the underlying fact that no matter where you’ve been, no matter what you’ve eaten, said, done or dreamt, in this moment…

…yeah.

This one.

Right now.

…You are exactly who you decide to be.

acknowledge the whole of who you are and decide who exactly you want to be.As you venture into the world of healthy eating, if you fail to acknowledge the whole of who you are and neglect to envision the possibility of who you can be, if the vastness of your universe is shrunken down to a mouth, a stomach and an intestinal tract, you’re missing out on the bigger picture.

Last Thursday’s nacho chips will not determine your fate. Even if you’ve lived a colorful life until now, the path you’ve traveled does not dictate the direction you’ll take from here. It doesn’t matter how many times you’ve fallen off the proverbial “bandwagon” with your food and your health, or your life. You are not the byproduct of what you’ve consumed and digested or done.

You are not damaged goods.
You have not failed.

You may have skinned knees and scraped elbows from your travels in life and love and health, but those are the marks of a person who persists, who is determined and who is committed to finding solutions. I mean, you’re still here, right? ;-)

So do me a favor, before we take this journey any further. Consider the possibility that no matter what you’ve eaten, no matter who you’ve loved or what you believe you’ve failed to achieve until now, in this moment…

…uh-huh.

This one.

Right now.

…You are exactly who you decide to be.

And that, my brave, new friend, certainly opens up an endless universe of infinite possibilities, now doesn’t it. ;-)

Love and possibilities,
