The Liver Flush

We've amped things up a bit by adding a Liver Flush to our cleanse program! I've looked at the protocol over the years, wanting to give it a try, but have am always intimidated by the long and strict guidelines. Thanks to Adam (he's done it 3 times already) I finally gave it a shot, and so glad I did, but I won't be jumping up and down to do it again next week - perhaps in the future. Here's my experience...

Day 6

We continued with our light eating plan, starting out with a large glass of mostly fresh apple, celery, lime, and ginger juice for breakfast. We then trekked to the stor
e to get the supplies for our flush: epsom salts, grapefruit, and olive oil.
I whipped up a yummy green... or rather brown, smoothie for lunch: frozen strawberries, apple, chard, spinach, water with a bit of lecithin, maca, mesquite, lucuma. Sweet and delish! Our last meal of the day was 2 grapefruits, finished by 3pm.

*I'll give a basic breakdown of the liver and gallbladder flush guidelines, mixed with my experience - if you want an in depth understanding, check it out HERE.

*The most important piece of advice I can give is to do this when you have 2 free days at home, or in any place you are comfortable. You'll soon see why.

*It is recommended to do a parasite killing program before embarking on the liver cleanse, but we did not do this. We just did our fasting and returned to
light eating 1 1/2 days beforehand - this is important! It's not recommended to enter a liver flush straight from a fast of you will get sick from drinking all the olive oil. It's best to have something in your system.

*On the day of the flush eat a NO FAT breakfast and lunch - this is important for the bile to build up and create pressure in the liver, allowing more stones to be pushed out. We ate fruits and greens.

*Timing is critical - keep to the schedule in order for success.

2pm: Stop eating! We extended this time to 3pm because we go to bed later than 10pm (in this case it had to be 11pm) which is when you are supposed to go to sleep with this program.
Get your drink ready: Stir 4 tablespoons epsom salts into 3 cups of water. Chill the mixture in the fridge until it is time to drink (the chilled water makes it a bit easier to palate).

6pm: Have your first drink. Measure out 3/4 cup of the epsom salts & water from the whole batch. Rinse your mouth with a little water if needed. Get out your grapefruit/olive oil to warm up.
I'll tell you straight up, the epsom salts in water tastes like shit - it's totally bitter and was hard for me to get down, but do-able. I squeezed a little lemon and grapefruit juice into mine. You can actually use grapefruit instead of water for the whole batch if you want.

8pm: Drink another 3/4 cup epsom salts. Wrap up your evening activities.

9:45pm: Prepare. Squeeze 1/2-3/4 cup fresh grapefruit juice - strain any pulp out. Mix the juice with 1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil. Optional: Add 10-20 drops black walnut tincture (to kill parasites coming from the liver). We didn't use the tincture since we didn't have access to any.
Go to the bathroom one last time! Get ready for bed.

10pm: Drinkyour grapefruit/olive oil . Drink standing up and get it all down within 5 minutes. You can chase it with a bit of honey, or vinegar/oil if needed.
Adam mixed ours in the blender with a clove of garlic and a bit of orange juice. It turned out like creamy, delicious salad dressing - a bit garlicy though.

Lie down immediately, on your back, with your head high on a pillow. Lie very still for at least 20 minutes.

Oh man, this seemed to be a challenge for me. I could feel the drink trickling through me and heard various gurgling sounds - and my belly bloated out. Also, I sleep on my side or front, so trying to sleep on my back was uncomfortable. Plus the psychology of staying still in this position made me restless... so I didn't fall sleep for quite a while. I also got cold and needed another blanket, so about 40 mins later, got up for a few seconds to grab another blanket which was beside the bed.
I woke up at 3am and felt nauseous, which is common. Stood over the toilet wondering if I'd throw up, but no. Fortunately I went back to sleep pretty easily and woke up feeling much better.

Next Morning: Upon rising, take the third does of epsom salts. Go back to bed. Expect diarrhea in the morning.
We took our dose at 7am, and went back to bed, only to be woken up by at phone call from my mom at 8am with an urgent SOS (my parents basement flooded with water)... so we hopped up and went over to help out. I started "shittin like crazy" (pardon my language) before we left and it continued....
We had disgusting burbs all morning... I'm wondering if they wouldn't have been as bad if we'd left out the garlic... it's recommended not to have the morning dose of salts until any nausea/indigestion has gone away. Apparently I didn't wait long enough.

2 Hours later: Take the final does of epsom salts.
I kept going to the bathroom all morning and into the evening...over 20 times...eeks!
So... a person is supposed to strain their "stuff" to get the little green stones, but I wasn't into that idea (maybe next time)... I did, however, still see the "green peas" in the toilet every time - good sign! Glad they're out...

2 Hours Later: It's OK to start eating! Yay! Start with fresh juice. 30 mins later eat some fruit. Gradually ease back into food.
We started with a cup of juice: cucumber/celery/apple/ginger. A bit later Adam made a smoothie for us: pineapple, strawberries, spinach, cinnamon, water - it was sweet and tangy!

How was the experience?!
To chalk it all up, it's been a great week of resting from food - not having to make or eat food freed up time to do other things, plus after all the overindulgence from the holidays, I was starting to feel sluggish and heavy. The liver flush was a cool new experience - I'm sure I'll give it another go in the far future, with the straining method. I'll see in the next few days if I feel any different as a result (although there are so many variables).

I now feel extra inspired to get back into the kitchie to work on some projects! I'm craving salad with spirulina, hemp seeds, and sauerkraut, so that will be in high priority by tomorrow. Of course, Im also dreaming of delicious raw ice creams with choccie sauce, and chocolate in general :)
