Young Coconuts: A Brief History If you've spent anytime around raw food recipe books, websites, or blogs, you will have undoubtedly come across many, many recipes calling for "young coconut meat" or "young coconut water". For most beginner raw foodists, this may be a little confusing. The first time we saw a recipe that had "young coconut" in it, we thought... "What the heck is a young coconut?"
If you are also asking this question right now, here is our brief summary of what a "young coconut" is: "Young coconuts are the immature (young) versions of their brown hairy, adult selves. They are white, hard, and are cut into an odd shape by their growers for better shipping and use."
We raw foodists sure do love our young coconuts, but until recently we've been relegated to paying high prices for individual coconuts, or going to local Asian markets to buy bulk young coconuts. Worst of all, the young coconuts you see in stores arenon-organic. They can often be moldy and sometimes are a little "too young". What does that mean? Well, when you open one up and see a purplish hue that doesn't yield much meat, you can be assured it also has low quality water. Other young coconuts can just be "bad", and they will smell rotten as soon as you open one. Organic or non-organic, your coconuts should never smell bad on the inside. But what many raw foodists and many raw newbies don't know is that many, many raw experts and raw enthusiasts claim that these young coconuts are dipped many times in chemicals by their growers! In fact, it has been said they are dipped up to three times in various chemicals before being sent to consumers. Including formaldehyde. Yuck. What's a conscious raw foodie to do? Problem Solved, thanks to Raw Guru
One Beautiful Organic Young Coconut from Raw Guru We just had a late night conversation with Alex Malinsky, the master behind RawGuru.com, and he is announcing to the world today that his company is now shipping certified organic, young coconuts!
This is quite a shock to the raw food world, as we were often told of this being an impossibility. Something that maybe people in Hawaii only had access to, but not us "regular raw food folk".
How You Can Support Organic Coconuts!! Recently Alex shipped us out a sample pack of these special organic coconuts. Let us tell you, these coconuts are amazing, and without trying to sound to basic about it, we're going to try and give you a description of why these coconuts are so incredible.
Our Honest Thoughts on Raw Guru's Organic Young Coconuts
We're going to give you a classic Raw Food Right Now breakdown of the benefits of Alex's coconuts.
First off, these coconuts not only look different, they actually feel different. It's hard to explain. You will have to hold one yourself to find out.
These wonderful coconuts are:
- Round, not "cut".
- Grown without chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, etc.
- Processed without chemical "dipping".
- Harvested and husked without any chemicals.
- Immediately refrigerated after trimming, and are shipped cold. Fresh!
- Best of all: organic!
Not only that, but they are said to have a longer shelf life, yield more meat, and have a sweet, yet lower sugar water content than the thai coconuts.
To find out more detail about how standard young coconuts are chemically dipped and how Alex's coconuts are different and why, visit his certified organic young coconut page.
Sounds great, but How Do They Measure Up to Regular Young Coconuts?
Let's just say that having these young coconuts is like having young coconuts for the first time. The difference is so astronomical, that we are having a hard time wanting to eat "regular" young coconuts ever again.
Yes, the price is at a premium compared to pesticide coconuts. These organic coconuts are currently selling at $44.95 for a box of 10, which averages to less than 5 dollars per coconut, and that is with free shipping. If you go to some Asian markets, they do give you bulk discounts for pesticide thai coconuts, but they are still 1.50-2.50 a piece. When you think about it that way these coconuts are not that expensive...and they are totally worth it.
It's like organic strawberries versus conventional strawberries. When you've been eating organic produce for a while, you can taste all the yucky stuff on conventional strawberries. You can't fool my taste buds. These coconuts are the same way. When you buy truly organic coconuts, you can taste the real thing.
If we all keep buying them, the price should eventually go down. If you ever remember buying organic produce in the 80's or 90's, you'll know what we're talking about. If we all vote with our money, these coconuts will become "normal", and the conventional, chemically-dipped ones will be the rare ones.
We want to live in a world where pesticide produce is the "weird" stuff, and everything is wild crafted, organic, biodynamic, ocean grown, and more.
No Traditional Thai Coconuts Taste Like These
The taste of Alex's coconuts are incredible. Sweet, smooth and if you are sensitive to tasting pesticides and chemicals, you will immediately know the difference.
For example, JS always had a hard time drinking coconut water, but was able to down this coconut water with absolute ease. It's as easy as drinking water and even makes coconut water smoothies taste incredible and feel even better inside of you.
The meat varied in each coconut, but all of it was thick and usable. And it made the best coconut puddings and smoothies ever!
Just be aware that these coconuts are a little more difficult to open than their conventional counterparts, but it is absolutely worth it. They are round and do not have the standard flat bottoms that are useful for putting on a counter and hacking into.
*Please be careful when opening these.*
