1. Have a snack before you eat 2. Delay the bread until the end of the meal 3. Order wisely - choose options with less fat and oil, order salads and fish 4. Order the doggie bag with your meal so you're already thinking about the part you're going to take home 5. Go light on the oil - you can always ask the chef to cook with less.

Turns out even a salad can be not so great for you if it's covered in dressing (and wouldn't you know the best tasting ones are not the lowfat ones). I find that the difference in taste between a thin layer of dressing and the loads that the restaurant normally puts on is barely noticable, so I just order the dressing on the side and dab it on ...
