I finished the second course today & now know how to basket weave frosting, make pansies, Victorian roses, violets, apple blossoms, primroses, daisies (all flowers are a pain stakingly long process with royal icing), rossettes, rope boarders, backward rope boarders, & shells.
Here's a picture from about 10pm Friday night of my first attempt at the frosted 2 layer oval cake I was supposed to bring in Saturday morning!

Good thing Jacob made a special trip for this gluten free mix! This was after a lot of repairing & finally got to the point where I said screw it & chucked it in the fridge & grabbed a regular mix. I had an exhausting day - not knowing if my grandma was going to make it, Ella giving herself her 2nd hair cut (although it was a big wad of hair I can't figure out where she cut it from), & now my first botched cake - I was afraid to pick up Connor! Don't worry, Jacob & kiddos devoured this not so pretty cake & it actually tasted really good for being gluten free!
So I tossed the second set of cakes together & in the oven quick, only to dump it out & one cake broke into 3 pieces. Ugh, i cant believe i didnt burst into tears, instead i couldnt stop laughing! Cake Doctor to the rescue!

Turned out just fine if I say so myself! Here is the beast - white cake with raspberry/frosting mix filling & frosted in almond buttercream.

Rosette borders top & bottom, basket weave all the way around, & covered with about 40 of the almost 100 flowers I made.

A few of the flowers. I'm not a victorian rose fan or daffodil fan. My daffodils always come out looking like pointsettias (2nd row from right) & the roses (orange globby looking things) take extra long to dry in between layers. My patience was running thin by 3am Wednesday morning. With my grandma's health in the air and a 48 hour drying period before I could use the flowers I had to get these made to be ready to use Saturday morning. So no, I normally don't stay up until 3, but I was stressed & this was a good reliever!
All the work for this fun little cake. Not really my style, but glad I learned the techniques! I loved making the violets, apple blossoms, primroses, pansies, & daisies though!

Prayers of peace & comfort for my grandma who us reaching the end of her life would be appreciated. She had H1N1 & a whole mess of underlying issues made it very bad. She's out of ICU finally and fighting, but the end is near. Many of my favorite childhood, summer time memories are of time spent with her & my grandpa at the family cabin. I'm looking forward to visiting her & spending time with her tomorrow.
