is it normal to have abdominal pain while menstruating? its not like cramp pain it feels really sore like i did a hundred sit up

i felt a bit sore like a day or two before my cycle but it went away i started it and all was fine i woke up at 2am and i felt really really sore in my abdomen and i dont know y i got into the fetal position and went to sleep an hour later woke up this morning and it still hurts but it hurts a bit more on the right side. is this normal? its never happened to me before so im just wondering if it is something that needs to be adressed by a doctor
