Support Healthy Birth With Your 2011 Membership In CIMS
You know birth matters. Whether you're advocating through the hospital system or taking this message 'to the streets', you are a cherished partner in a national movement to give women and babies a fighting chance at a normal birth. For that, four million three hundred thousand 'thanks'--roughly one for every woman who gives birth in the U.S. each year--would not suffice. We salute you and all that you do for moms and babies. Together, we can make birth better .
Times are tight across America and getting even tighter for many new parents. But, as we know all too well, women and babies are paying the highest price of all for unnecessary medical interventions that rob them of the safe and healthy births they deserve; increased risks of complications and lifelong harms are also part and parcel of the current maternity care environment. It doesn't have to be this way.
The Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative (MFCI) presents a model of maternity care that is shown to reduce harms to women and infants and reduce healthcare costs. As a supporter of CIMS and the MFCI, you recognize the timelessness of this important consensus document. Despite our nation's ever-evolving healthcare environment, the Principles and Ten Steps of the MFCI are as relevant today as they were in 1996. As intervention rates and healthcare costs spiral out of control, we'd argue that adoption of the MFCI Principles and Ten Steps is needed even more today than when the MFCI was ratified in 1996.
"From the moment I attended my first birth while in medical school, I knew with every fiber of my being that the events of our births--both as mothers and infants--impacts us for the rest of our lives in ways that are both subtle and profound. Nothing is more important to our health or that of our newborns than the way in which we, as women, are supported during pregnancy, labor, birth, and postpartum. That's why I wholeheartedly endorse and support the life-changing work of CIMS." ~Christiane Northrup, MD, FACOG, author of Women's Bodies, Women's Wisdom and The Wisdom of Menopause, and a CIMS Liftetime Member
The early support of CIMS Members, like Dr. Northrup, helped lay an important foundation; one on which we aim to amass the powerful coalition necessary to turn the tide and bring Mother-Friendly Care to every woman, every infant and every family across the nation.
Jodi, if you continue to hold up the MFCI as the gold standard of maternity care, we urge you to join the CIMS Membership this year in support of healthy birth options for all women. Critical resources, like The Birth Survey, our e-CIMS News electronic newsletter, and CIMS Fact Sheets, hang in the balance.
Please keep advocating for healthy birth, and help CIMS to do the same with your tax-deductible membership donation of $25, $50, $100 or more. Any amount is greatly appreciated by all of us who recognize the important and long-lasting effects of childbirth on women and their infants.
