Subject: Heal My PTSD Support Groups: Finally, you no longer have to feel alone.
Dear Jodi,
Are you doing everything possible to recover from PTSD, but find the journey overwhelming to endure alone? Do you wish you had people to talk to who understood what you're experiencing - because they've been there themselves?
Maybe you're on the other side, living with someone who has PTSD and wishing you knew the most effective ways to support him or her while being the best caregiver possible. Wouldn't it be helpful to hear what's worked for other caregivers so that all of the burden of interpretation and creativity doesn't fall on you?
Either way, I've got a solution for you. You see, when I was recovering from PTSD I felt so very alone. I didn't have a group of friends who understood what it meant to struggle with unpredictable and unmanageable PTSD symptoms. I was educating my family but it was still hard for them to process what I was feeling. I didn't have anyone I could talk to that immediately understood what I was experiencing on a daily basis.
I looked in my town for a local PTSD support group. No dice. I scoured my county, and even called my state capitol to research government agency support groups. Nada. No one could offer me a place to talk with others about my PTSD recovery process. I had to go it all alone.
And so did my family. Without any support my parents researched and sought the right therapist. They stayed close or gave me room depending on my wildly erratic moods. They were tolerant while I attempted to micro-manage the world, isolated myself and engaged in self-destructive behaviors. They exhausted themselves trying to help when they didn't know what to do.
Now that I'm 100% PTSD-free and certified to help others on their healing journey, I've decided to fill the support group void. In February 2011 I'm launching two types of virtual support groups, one for survivors, and one for PTSD caregivers. In these weekly meetings via an 800 telephone line you'll have the chance to talk to a small group of proactive people about how to cope, manage and strategize PTSD recovery.
Once a week, in a secure environment imagine being able to honestly:
- discuss personal experiences
- share ideas and suggestions for coping and healing
- feel the understanding of others
- build a strong community
- learn how to apply techniques to manage PTSD symptoms
- develop a support system
- empower PTSD recovery
- de-stress in a nurturing environment
- access new skills
- receive one-on-one professional coaching for your personal issues
With all of this support, you will be more conscious, proactive, focused and energized on your healing journey. Gone will be the days when you struggle alone. A weekly support group (plus a daily forum to provide support between meetings) will infuse your PTSD recovery journey with connection, communication and creativity - all things that help ease the stress of PTSD and propel you toward recovery goals!
If having personal support and people you can count on sounds like just what you need to add some extra power and control to your current recovery plan, then you're the right person to join a Heal My PTSD support group. For more information about joining either the survivor or caregiver support groups, sign up here .
You have enormous healing potential. The goal is learning to access it.
You can do this. I believe in you!
