brown discharge & clots

Posted by peaches

can anyone help, i have been having a brown discharge for 3 months on and off, sometimes for a day or three or a week or two weeks, no pattern at all, alot of the time is very dark with lots of little blood clots and soemtimes string like clots. i had a baby five months ago and it was a straight forward birth and only one stitch, i had no problems for 2 months after the birth, i am now on the pill injection but i was bleeding before that and its made no difference. the bleeding is usually with stomach ache. my periods before i had a baby were pretty light and lasted 4 days. i had a smear 10 weeks ago but im still waiting for results so i dont want to bother doctor till results come back, but i am very worried.

This is very normal, thought annoying, after birth and weaning! If you breastfeed, you won't get this annoying brown "tissue-like" discharge until after weaning (so you can postpone it for a year or more if you'd like) but if you don't nurse your baby, then you will have this to deal with on top of delivery recovery months after birth.

Basically the discharge is small amounts of old blood leaking from your cervix and uterus due to changes in your progesterone and estrogen levels. There isn't really any way to "fix" it and taking birth control can sometimes cause this without any pregnancy history whatsoever (this happened to me on Depo Provera in my teens long before having my children in my mid-20s).

So case in point, don't worry, it's normal just really irritating! Invest in lots of black or gray panties!
