While stories like Gina's often make the paper, we should remember that there are many many stories, like Gina's, where baby arrives safely, albeit unexpectedly, at home. Thanks Gina for sharing your story!
Braeden Nicholas was born on Tuesday, May 12th around 1:14pm at the Richardson home in University Park, MD! We did not plan a home birth and Braeden decided he didn't want to wait for us to get to Shady Grove hospital to be delivered by the Midwifery Care Associates midwives. Better than being born on the beltway or I-270 though!!
the short version of his birth story: My labor began around 4am with short, irregular and easily-manageable contractions which continued throughout the morning. At noon, I decided to try and lay down with our 2 year-old daughter Kayla to see if I could rest and nap for a bit. Suddenly, I had 2 very strong and intense contractions, on the third my water broke. My husband Chad helped me to the bathroom and within 2-3 more contractions, I started to feel his head crowning. Our wonderful doula, Ursula Sabia Sukinik, showed up just "in the Nick of time" (Nicholas was my father's name) to help deliver the baby and catch him as Chad and the 911 paramedics looked on and tried to help as much as possible. We had no idea he would arrive so fast! He started crying, we gathered our wits and we prepared to go to the hospital to have us checked out.
Braeden Nicholas weighed in at 8 pounds, 9 ounces and measured 21.5 inches long. We are all still shocked at his sudden and intense arrival, especially after being 10 days overdue (due date was May 2nd). We are very truly blessed that everything turned out okay and that he is perfectly healthy. We had many angels looking over all of us!
