33 week ultrasound and appointment, plus grandpa's cancer

Posted Dec 02 2008 4:59pm
We are in the home stretch. Or at least that's what everyone is telling me. Time still seems to be flying by so it's had to fathom that the pregnancy is almost over.

Let's see. The day before Thanksgiving I saw the perinatologist. Had another ultrasound. He said everything looked good and the baby was the right size. He wasn't forthcoming with details but did send me home with another picture. It's the same picture twice. I only recognize a spine in the picture, but very helpfully drew the baby parts on the bottom picture. Even an eyebrow and eyelashes. I think he utilized some artistic freedom. I cooked for Thanksgiving. It would have been very relaxed, but that is apparently not our way. My grandfather fell in his hallway that morning and it took him 3 hours to get back to bed. He has prostate cancer and has been having radiation. He decided that he didn't need to live anymore, so he stopped eating a few days before. My dad sat with him for a couple hours and made him eat. He refused to come to dinner, so my dad brought him leftovers after dinner as well. I attempted to get the roasting pan from the top shelf and knocked a heavy saucepan over. It would have hit my toes, if I wasn't pregnant. It landed hard on the top of my stomach. The baby refused to move for hours so I was also watched for most of Thanksgiving to see if I would have to go to the hospital. After dinner she started kicking like crazy, so my hospital trip was adverted.

My grandfather wasn't so lucky. The day after Thanksgiving my father found him at home having not eaten the food brought over the day before. He brought him to the ER and he was admitted with a bladder infection. He's fully hydrated now and appears to be eating. He's a diabetic and they found sores on his feet. They had to do an emergency operation on his feet so the infection wouldn't spread. If he wasn't in the hospital, we never would have known and the infection would have killed him. He's 83 and has numerous health problems. We know he doesn't have a lot of time left. If the cancer killed him, it would be sad but understandable. An infection in the foot or killing himself by starvation is just unacceptable. He remains at the hospital.

I had my 33 week 5 day appointment today. I haven't gained any weight in the last two weeks and my blood pressure is 127/66. The doctor gave me the full results of the ultrasound. The baby weighs 4 1/2 pounds, right on track. The amniotic fluid and placenta look good. And the baby is head down, ready to go. Of course, she isn't going anywhere. Even though I'm having a c-section, I still get constant braxton hicks contractions and a stabbing pain in my cervix every time she hits it with her head. I knew she was head down for a couple of weeks now. That pain can only mean one thing. I also got to partially schedule my c-section. January 7th. 38 weeks 6 days. They'll call me later to set the exact time, but she said to figure on 8am. So we have 4 weeks left as of tomorrow.

I go back to the preinatologist for another ultrasound in two weeks. I'll see the doctor that week as well. My first pants off appointment. Time for my group b strep test. And the state of NJ has decided to make it madatory to have another HIV test a few weeks before delivery. So I'll do that in 2 weeks too. Nevermind that I'm married, monogamous, and just had a test 6 months ago.
