If you've ever felt pain in your leg for an extended period of time, chances are that you've googled "sciatica" to see if that's what wrong with you. I can't say I'm satisfied with information I've found out about it online so far, most info is just from medical websites promoting surgery.
What does sciatica feel like? Since sciatica is the impingement of the sciatic nerve, and the pain is nerve pain, the feeling of sciatica is very intense. Some days, your lower back might ache, other days, there may be pain running down your entire leg. Still other days you may only feel pain in your ankle. You can see the sciatic nerve in yellow in the image above.
Here is a list of ways sciatica can feel. If you read this list and think- this is exactly what I have- its time to take care of yourself and treat your pain effectively and immediately. Don't let it go, it will just get worse. I'll soon be posting some info on ways to deal. But for now, here's the list of some symptoms:
-Sacroiliac pain on one side (or both sides) that seems to radiate down your leg
-Acute pain in the hamstring tendon (right where your butt meets the back of your leg)
-Pain radiating down the back of your leg, all the way into the arch of your foot
-Pain in certain points down the leg: in the hip, knee, ankle, and arch
-Lasting tingling, all throughout your leg, as if your leg is asleep/"pins and needles" that won't go away
-Sharp, knife-like pain in the hamstring or hamstring tendon
-A "ring of pain" around your hip
-Pain in the leg that you can't seem to pinpoint and just won't go away
-"Electric shock" feelings in the leg
-Pain that gets worse from sitting, including driving
I have seriously suffered from sciatica myself, on and off for years, and I wouldn't wish it on my worst enemy!
If you see this list and it seems like you have sciatica, make an appointment with your doctor to get yourself checked out. There are many causes, and its important to find out what is causing your pain. There are some serious causes, like a herniated disk.
I'll continue to post about sciatica- treatment options, ways to deal with it yourself, causes, thoughts, etc. Read more!
