The Wunda Chair and Electric Chair

Posted Aug 25 2008 3:02pm

Joseph Pilates invented the Wunda Chair (the smaller chair) as a piece of home exercise equipment.

He designed the Chair to work like the reformer, yet it was small enough to fit in a New York City apartment. His original chair was multifunctional- when turned on its back, it could be used as an arm chair, and when turned upright, it could be used as pilates equipment.

The Electric Chair , also known as the High Chair , works like the Wunda Chair. Many exercises can be done on both chairs, and some can only be done on one or the other. The electric chair is great because you actually get an electric shock if you do an exercise incorrectly (kidding).

Since the Chair was designed to be an at-home-version of the reformer, most reformer exercises can be done on the chair. Because of its small size, it forces you to use you core muscles to perform the exercises. In many cases, the peddle won't move at all if you're not really working from your core! Either that, or you would fall off, or the peddle would come crashing down, depending on what exercise you're trying to do. Basically, the chair does not lend itself to cheating!

Unlike the reformer, there is no set order to the exercises.

Its nice to do a variety of exercises all in a row, so the body completes a full range of movements while on the chair. Abdominals, legs, back extends, obliques, arms, some fabulous stretches... there are so many options for every muscle group. So basically, as your teacher, I can lovingly torture you however I please! Love that! Read more!
