The Tower

Posted Aug 24 2008 9:44pm

The tower is great because it takes up less space than a full cadillac, and allows you to do most of the same exercises. It's actually very similar to the Cadillac, without the long bars, foot fuzzies, and trapeze along the top. Since it takes up less space, a studio can usually hold more than one tower and offer tower classes. In a tower class, the whole group works out on the tower all together. At Rhinebeck Pilates, tower classes are very popular because its a great way to be able to workout on the equipment for less than the price of a private session.

There are two versions of the tower: one attaches to the wall and is also known as the Wall Unit. The other type of tower is attached to one end of a reformer and is also known as the Combination Unit or Total Workout System.
Just like the cadillac, the tower has springs, bars, and straps that assist you in working your legs, arms, abdominals... let's just say its a full body workout! A typical tower class also incorporates mat work, the magic circle, and possibly weights.
Recently, my friend and fellow pilates instructor, Nora Machione-Weiss, told me a little bit about the history of the tower and how it originated. Interestingly, it was not invented by Joseph Pilates. Steve Giordano, a well known and long time pilates instructor, is the inventor of the tower. In the 1980's, one of the only pilates studios other than the main studio in NYC was located at Purchase College, in Purchase NY. Steve was an instructor there, and after looking around the room and seeing all the large pieces of equipment, devised the tower as a way to save space in the studio.
