There are two versions of the tower: one attaches to the wall and is also known as the Wall Unit. The other type of tower is attached to one end of a reformer and is also known as the Combination Unit or Total Workout System. Recently, my friend and fellow pilates instructor, Nora Machione-Weiss, told me a little bit about the history of the tower and how it originated. Interestingly, it was not invented by Joseph Pilates. Steve Giordano, a well known and long time pilates instructor, is the inventor of the tower. In the 1980's, one of the only pilates studios other than the main studio in NYC was located at Purchase College, in Purchase NY. Steve was an instructor there, and after looking around the room and seeing all the large pieces of equipment, devised the tower as a way to save space in the studio.
