Anyone who has taken my classes knows that I'm a big fan of the Magic Circle!
One of the things I like most about it is that, although it seems modern, it was actually invented by Joseph Pilates. It has been told that after he created the Ladder Barrel (by slicing an actual barrel in half) he had the metal rings left over and decided to use them to make the Magic Circle. Isn't that so cool? There are other people who say that isn't truely how he invented the Circle, but I hope that's how it happened because I love that story!
The Magic Circle is great because it adds challenge to any pilates exercise. It more or less forces you to use your core or else you will drop the circle. As soon as the circle is added, you can immediately feel your abdominals, inner thighs, outer thighs... wherever the circle is placed.
When I add the circle to an exercise in class, its not JUST because I love to torture you. Its mostly because the circle is a great tool to help the body learn how to properly engage the core throughout the whole class, not just when the circle is there. Yes, you should connect that deeply into your abs and inner thighs even without the circle!
The Magic Circle is something I think everyone should have at home. Its small and easy to store, and you can grab it for a quickie workout if you're stuck in the house for some reason. Joseph Pilates intended for everyone to be able to practice pilates in their own homes, and this is one good way to do it!
Speaking of Joseph Pilates... did you know he also invented the Magic Square??? More on that another time!
