The Cadillac

Posted Aug 25 2008 3:02pm

The Cadillac is the largest piece of pilates equipment you will find in any studio today. Its large size is where it got its name- after Joe built his piece of equipment in his New York studio, someone came into the studio and remarked of its size- "What a Cadillac!" It is also known as the Trapeze Table.

In early days, the Cadillac was a portable structure that could roll over a bed. It is easy to imagine Joe using structures like this in his very early years of rehabilitating injured, bedridden soliders during World War II. He even had a smaller version of a his portable structure that could roll over a wheelchair. How fascinating is that!

So many exercises can be done on the Cadillac from many different angles. There are two ends with different types of bars and springs, there are the bars across the top with the foot fuzzies and trapeze bar. The Cadillac is a virtual jungle gym for pilates! There are springs for arm work, springs for legwork, bars and springs for spinal extention and articulation. Of course, all the bars and springs are also for abdominal work.

The best part about the Cadillac is also what is unique about it- the bars going across the top with the fuzzies and trapeze attached. Some of the best stretches that allow a great range of motion and also require the most focus and control, are done on these upper parts of the Cadi. The upper bars and trapeze make possible some of the coolest moves in the method- hanging upsides, arching upside down, twisting and hanging upsided down, hanging in a plank while doing pull-ups with your arms, hanging from one bar while circling the legs around, and of course the Walk-Over. These are exercises for our bodies and our spirits.

At Rhinebeck Pilates, some of us have our special pet names for the Cadillac. Some of the more colorful names are "The Four Poster" and "The Birdcage". We may not all agree on what to call it, but I know we all agree that its an amazing and ingenius apparatus. Read more!
