Hoodwinking LD folks

Posted Mar 22 2006 12:00am

In a first-person entry, a blogger who identifies himself as “Lucifer, Bringer of Light,” posted an entry in his blog that caught my eye. He called it “wow my true self is showing himself to me” and it tells about his diagnosis as having Learning Disabilities.

well i guess now i have a learning disability that i never knew about. i thought i was just a little crazy but now im like special. so soposudly i am a visual person and i think it pictures which i thought everyone did but now i know better. but anyways my memory and comprehension of things is like fucked up so i will have to read a page like 5 times to understand what im reading. oh and because im so visual i stop paying attention when teachers are lecturing.

I hope that Lucifer gets the help he needs. Meanwhile, however, I’ve got to fret about the balogna—that he’s a visual learner is at the root of his problems—that someone apparently passed off on him. Can’t we just get over the pop-psych approach to LD and get serious about helping people? Why not simply determine what it is that Lucifer needs to learn and teach it to him? I know that de-mystification appealing, but it also requires us to use bogus explanations for things. Why lie to people?
