Why is my shorkie vomiting?

Posted by LeoLadyUSA

My Shorkie, Jaz (yorkie/shitzu) is 1yr. 5mo. old and snce last week she has started to vomit 1 -3 hrs after she is fed.  I have taken her to the vet, he has started her on ID formula food (bland) and am instructed to go back next week.  She doesn't seem to have any other symptons other than vomitting.  It will happen every once in a while, not after every meal.  Sometimes an entire day will go by with all her feedings and no vomitting.  Then the next day she may vomit once after one of her meals, sometimes 2-3 hrs later (after playing, resting).  Her energy level is great - her appetite fine.  She has no problems going to the bathroom and other than the vomitting, you would never know she wasn't well.    Please tell me what you think may be causing this.  I am very very worried about her and would appreciate any info you may be able to provide.  Thank you in advance for your attention to this matter.

Vomiting is one of the most difficult problems to sort out in dogs.  Part of the difficulty is just what you've described: a lot of vomiting dogs act normal otherwise.  The other difficult part is that vomiting is such a general sign and can be a result of a problem just about anywhere in a dog's body...not just in the stomach.

All that being said, it sounds like your dog is now vomiting less while on the bland diet.  You should let your veterinarian recheck your dog as instructed.  If her vomiting is going to respond to the change in food, it might take a couple of weeks on the new food.  If by then she isn't over the vomiting, your veterinarian will want to do some extra investigation.  That would include some basic blood work, possibly some X-ray studies, and possible an ultrasound exam.
