Why do dogs gums itch?

Posted by caitlin,hunn

I have a 12 year old Dachshund named Jake. He has been rubbing his nose/gums on every object he could find. We're not sure what's wrong with him.Jake is also blind... What could I do to stop this itching?

Without having seen your dog doing this rubbing, I'd suggest that the first possible explanation would be a tartar build-up along the teeth and gums that is irritating your dog's mouth.  You should also check the whole mouth to be sure there isn't a foreign body of some type lodged in one of the cheek pouches.

Some dogs will also exhibit what is called "face pleasure" that is manifested by rubbing the muzzle along the floor or other surface.  This is assumed to be a sign of satisfaction, gratification, or euphoria.  Dr. Myrna Milani can elucidate this concept in greater detail.
