I have a 6 (just turned) year old shepard/lab/greyhound mix...80 lbs and solid. For the past few weeks he will hold up his right front paw after excercising all day with no limp or any sign of anything irregular. He will do this after resting for a bit...then when he get's up he hold"s it up...with no sign of swelling. After resting all night, he will rise in the morning with no sign of anything. I am wondering if it is a pulled muscle or what?
You could actually be seeing the results of a sprained ligament, a strained muscle, or some type of bony involvement in your dog's front leg. Any of these might show what you're describing...favoring the leg for a while, then using the leg normally after a night of rest.
Since this has been going on for a couple of weeks, with no apparent improvement/change in the pattern, it would be wise for you to have your dog examined by your veterinarian. A thorough exam should help eliminate any of the more serious possibilities, such as a torn ligament, some type of joint damage/arthritis,or (since this is a large dog) a possible bone tumor.
If those can be eliminated, you might be able to proceed with just medication and enforced rest. Good luck!
