Recently (a month ago) I hurt my right foreleg (wrist). I was out with my buddies Dalia (Dane) and Dawson (Corgi-Cattle dog mix) for our weekly long walk. Well, I always get so excited to run and play with Dalia and I tried to tackle her, but she dodged me and I fell right on my wrist with my paw tucked under. OUCH! I cried with that one.
It really scared Mom. She and Dalia’s Mom thought at first I’d broken it but Mom prodded, poked and manipulated it all about and it all of a sudden felt better. That meant we continued on with our walk, run, play, WOOF!
I won’t go into the details of my healing protocol bepaws Mom has detailed it out for continuing education at the American Council of Animal Naturopath (ACAN). But I will say it is only a month later and you can’t tell anything was ever wrong with my leg. Most likely a bad strain.
Here is what I attribute my speedy healing to
1. I walked on it right away. IF it had been broken that wouldn’t have been possible of course nor wise to encourage, but it wasn’t thank God. But movement most likely helped it to not get so inflamed and stiff. The conventional approach often says to allow no movement at all until healed. But the thing is, lymph is what moves toxins out of the body but without movement the lymph doesn’t move. Plus movement kept everything lubricated. I was restricted in my movement to some extent – no off-leash walking at first, no playing with friends for two weeks, etc., but I was still taken for daily walks.
2. I eat a species appropriate raw diet consisting of meat, bones and organs. My diet was tweaked a bit to encourage speedier healing of my ligaments, and a supplement was added as well.
3. Mom used a combination of homeopathy and essential oils to help me heal. She never used them at the same time of day but did use both daily.
4. Daily sun baths. I have a futon to lay on in the shade if it gets too hot in the sun – we get LOTS of sun here where I live. So I got out and laid in the sun a lot.
5. I wasn’t pampered. They did not encourage me feeling sorry for myself but kept telling me how strong and healthy I am, WOOF! This helped me become a man-dog, WOOF! I started lifting my leg to pee finally. Okay I know this may not have a thing to do with it but I did become a man-dog this month. I’m nine months old as of the 2nd of March – so I got my man-dog on early hehe!
I have known humans who opt for surgery for their knees for example that end up having more than one surgery and they still do not get or feel better. My mom has healed her own injuries (knee, calf, shoulder – sports related) sans surgery and drugs, using only a natural, whole-health protocol. I have also known of dogs being healed using only a natural protocol for things such as cruciate or ACL repair sans surgery. So I know these things are possible.
I believe choice to make in these instances all depends on the level of the owner’s confidence, comfort level, and knowledge as well as their dog’s diet, stress levels, pain, etc. It also depends on how bad the injury is – sometimes conventional intervention in the form of surgery is the only alternative although in most cases there isn’t a need for all of their drugs as nature has a vast and amazing pharmacy that doesn’t have all of the side-effects or adverse events that conventional medications do.
My humans kept things calm, in a nice gentle healing environment for me. They invested in several times daily of all that needed doing believing I’d be healed in no time and I was! They stayed the course, trusting in the laws of health – that can make all the difference as trust and belief are a big part of this process. As you can see in the photo taken yesterday (March 11, 2012) I have no residual pain or injury.
This isn’t my whole protocol as there was more but you get the general idea.
