Rover Oaks Pet Resort recently held a month-long donation drive, Operation: War Dogs, to support the Texas Chapter of the United States War Dogs Association , US Military K-9 Fund. The drive began on Memorial Day and culminated on Independence Day, July 4. This year, Rover Oaks raised over $10,000 for US Military K-9 Fund through Operation: War Dogs.
US Military K-9 Fund is an organization of former and current military dog handlers and other individuals committed to promoting the long history of military service dogs, establishing permanent War Dog Memorials, and educating the public about the invaluable service of these canines to our country. The organization relies completely on the work of volunteers, so 100% of money donated goes to the War Dogs.
During Operation: War Dogs, Rover Oaks matched 10% of all money raised. Donations of $25 received a commemorative dog tag necklace and donations of $100 received a free night of lodging at Rover Oaks. In addition, Rover Oaks decorated their facilities with patriotic paw prints presenting the names of the clients and community members who contributed to USWDA. These donations will help provide an abundance of critically needed items including K9 medications, food, grooming tools, bedding and other necessities.
“We were thrilled to reach our total goal of $10,000” said Steve Smith, Owner of Rover Oaks Pet Resort. “The Houston and Katy communities have been overwhelmingly supportive and generous with Operation: War Dogs; we think this will be an effort that continues to grow for a long time to come.”
“I am still in shock”, said Ann Morrison, co-founder of US Military K-9 Fund. “We never expected anything like this. The first thing we plan to do with some of the funds received from Operation: War Dogs is to bring home retired military working dogs from overseas to their new adoptive families. We will let them know you have helped the dogs come home.”
Military Working Dogs have been used by the U.S. Military since World War I. Dogs, along with their volunteer handlers, are trained in teams as scouts, trackers, sentry, mine/booby-trap/tunnel and water detection of hostile forces. Dogs have been used in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Persian Gulf, Bosnia, Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. Today all branches of our Armed Forces are utilizing Military Patrol Dogs specializing in drug and bomb/explosive detection. Currently, there are approximately 600-700 of these canines in the Middle East in such places as Kuwait, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia and Iraq, patrolling bases, military compounds, ammunition depots and military check points. They are guarding and protecting our military personnel as they were trained to do, with courage, loyalty and honor.
