Posted Feb 19 2009 3:58pm

Preventing canine urinary infection is not as difficult as most dog owners think. Prevention, as they say, is better than a cure. So, instead of trying to treat urinary infections in dogs, you should try to prevent them in the first place. How do you do that? Let us take a look.

When it comes to preventing canine urinary infection, there are four important things that you, as a dog owner, must do.

1. Proper diet: Give your dog lots high quality food, either commercial or homemade. A lot of dog owners these days give their dogs processed pet food which damages their health pretty badly. Give your dog a diet that is rich in proteins and has a lot of water content.

2. Water: Water is the most basic requirement of all the animals in this world and your dog is not any different. Dehydration is one of the most important causes of urinary tract infections. So, make sure your dog drinks plenty of pure water. Please note the emphasis on ‘pure’. Tap water is not recommended for dogs, as it contains a lot of bacteria, organic and inorganic substances, and toxic chemicals which can be really harmful to your dog’s health. So, if you are serious about prevention canine urinary infection, give your dog pure water to drink.

3. Cleanliness: Bathe your dog regularly and keep it clean. It is a simple advice that can help your dog stay away from bacterial infections. If your dog is dirty, especially in the genital area, the chances of a bacterial infection are really high. So, get some good quality dog soap and dog shampoo and wash your cute little dog regularly.

4. Supplements: There are some very good natural supplements that can both treat and prevent urinary tract infections in dogs. They also help maintain a normal PH in the urine, a step necessary to have the urine clean the urinary tract of infection. These are homeopathy based medications and are completely safe to give your dogs regularly. These supplements are completely natural and very powerful. They can boost the immune system of your dog and prevent recurrent infections as well.

Preventing canine urinary infection, like I already mentioned, is really easy. All you need to do is understand what is good and what is bad for your dog’s health and take care of it appropriately. Sounds pretty simple, doesn’t it?
