There are a lot of nerve endings on the tail and any kind of irritation to the tail will get a dog's attention right away! Add to that the fact that most dogs can easily reach their tail and chew/lick at it--they can further damage their tail. Depending on what originally caused the sore on the tail, you might have to consider having the damaged part amputated. Your veterinarian can advise you....
