In a puppy, intestinal worms (hookworms, roundworms, whipworms) can irritate the bowel enough to cause bleeding and/or loose stools. Parvovirus usually causes bloody, very loose diarrhea and those pups are acting sick. Eating the wrong kind of food can sometimes lead to blood in the stools.
If the stool has been otherwise normal in appearance and the pup is acting OK, blood in the stool just one time might not be a reason to get excited. However, if the blood shows up again, the stools get loose, or the pup acts sick, you should have him examined by your veterinarian.
