liver problems from chicken jerky?

Posted by j b.

I have been buying chicken jerky from a large chain store for several years.  It is my dogs' favorite treat.  Since buying the last bag of jerky, my dogs had 7 - 10 days of intermittent vomiting.  I had one of the dogs checked this week and she has increased liver enzymes, which were normal two months ago.

I stopped giving them the treats two and a half weeks ago and the vomiting stopped right away.  The jerky is from China.  Would there be any contaminant/disease (such as bird flu) which could be the culprit?

Is anyone else having this problem after feeding the jerky treats? My vet is treating her w/ amoxacillin and denosyl.  Any other idease?

Thanks much!

There was a massive recall of chicken jerky products from China several months ago. As I recall it was due to salmonella, but don't quote me on it. (A google search for "chicken jerky pet treats recall" should turn up more information.) If you happened to get some of these treats before the recall, that might be the problem.

Yes, Dr. Myrna is right about the recall. I'd not feed anything coming from China. You need to contact the manufacturer to let them know about your dog's symptoms also.

I'd sure not feed any of this stuff to your dog anymore. Dogs are opportunistic scavenger carnivores who need a raw meaty bone diet to thrive.
