little lump?

Posted by peewoddin

My 5 month old puppy has a little lump just by her left hip.  It is not sore and does not feel hard.  She is extremely healthy and happy - is this serious?  Has anyone had any experience with this? I don't always like to run to the vet with everything but perhaps I should take her?  Any advice appreciated!

If it's smooth and in the skin and you can get your fingers around it, it could just be an insect bite or response to minor trauma. If she's fine otherwise, there's no harm in taking a wait and see approach. Periodically check  (every 5-7 days) and if gets getting smaller, that's probably what it was. If it gets bigger or changes in any way, then she should be examined by your veterinarian. If you find that it's hard for you not to check the lump more often, ask a friend to do the weekly checks for you. The reason is that, if you do it every day it's possible to miss very gradual changes. On the other hand, someone who hasn't been around the dog would notice the difference right away.
