is an enlarged heart in a young dog (small pedigree) serious?

Posted by d517

My dog, a 3 yr old Shitzu/Poodle hybrid, was seen by his Vet Friday, and given an xray, and today, I was told he has an enlarged heart, and now has to go for blood workup, and an EKG.  How serious is this?

An enlarged heart can mean different things, depending on the breed of dog, its age, and whether or not there are any other health issues present.  After the lab work and the EKG, your veterinarian should have a better idea about what is going on.  It does have the potential to be a serious problem, so more information is better.
