Can I give my dog OTC human cough meds? I currently give him 1/4 tsp of Benadryl as needed for allergies.

My family has been fighting "flu like illnesses" and seasonal allergies lately.  Our 13yr ols Shih Tzu had a ruptured anal gland 2 weeks ago(treated w antibiotics that were injected into the anal gland) and now has developed a hacking cough and runny nose in the last 2 days.  I've been giving him liquid benadryl to help with the drainage. His is 16lbs and I've been giving him 1/4 tsp, is this enough?  And can I give him OTC human cough meds? Can we pass illnesses like this to him?  Can he get swine flu from us?  He isn't around any other animals except when he gets groomed.  Which

First of all, allergies and human flu viruses do not affect your dogs and cats.  Nor does the swine flu virus.  Both the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Centers for Disease Control agree on that.  So, any runny noses in the whole household are most likely coincidental.

Benadryl is commonly used for dogs but should only be used for specific problems and what you're describing doesn't sound like that's warranted.  You should definitely stay away from any human cough medicines, even if they are OTC.  If this persists for your Shih Tzu, you should have the dog examined by your veterinarian.
